So…………………………..where does one begin on a day like this? I had a little visit to the neurologist yesterday, I’ve been having headaches behind my right eye. They are horrible, nauseating and down right inconvenient. I can’t work, crochet, read for very long w/o reaching for an ice pack and another dose of Advil. Coffee has been my friend, but it keeps me up late at night, which would be fine, except I can’t read! (Twiddling your thumbs at midnight is not fun.)
So, the neurologist, nice guy, poked and prodded, literally, made me stand on one foot, touch my nose–this is modern medicine?–he asked me a gazillion questions and concluded he wanted an MRI. Great.
The call was made and I asked the receptionist to ask about pricing. I’m paying out of pocket. I got those looks, the looks from people who do have insurance that feel really judgemental, like I had just crawled out of my shopping cart for this appt.
The receptionist was loud on the phone, you know like “can I get a price check on hemorrhoid cream at register 5!!” kind of loud. I gently asked her to write the info down. We waited. The info came over the phone and she began writing a number with a whole lot of zeros at the end. My headache got worse, the room felt smaller and I really, really wanted out of the building.
The good news is they give you a price break if you pay for them all at once–I need three different angles? shots? who knows. So that will be $5,100 in cash, otherwise it oddly doubles to $11,000. Yep, all those zeros are typed correctly. Eleven THOUSAND dollars. That’s more than a year’s rent, graduate school, a deposit on a house–a really small house in another state, but still, a house payment.
So……………………….yep. I’m having a little trouble breathing today, haven’t quite gotten out of the house yet, am laughing on the outside and shrieking on the inside. Needless to say, the MRI is on hold. Meanwhile, I shouldn’t be on the computer but I had to SAY SOMETHING to the universe, and this is where I go when i need to get it all out.
My advice: dont’ be me, find a way to buy medical insurance.
